雨神星在(2000年3月10日被伊格纳西奥·费瑞恩（Ignacio Ferrin）发现，2003年8月国际天文联会正式命名为Huya，Huya为南美洲印第安神话中的雨神。该天体与海王星的轨道共振为3:2，因此被分类为冥族小天体。
